Conversational AI platforms: match the product to the conversation
Understand text agents, voice runtimes and managed phone assistants, then evaluate context, actions, recovery and operational ownership.

A conversational AI platform is useful only when it can carry a request from a person's words to a trustworthy result. For a phone assistant, that includes audio, timing, business context, actions, and the record left after the call. A language model alone does not supply the complete service.
Separate the layers
| Layer | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Conversation model | Interpret the request and formulate a response |
| Voice runtime | Manage audio, turns, interruptions and session lifecycle |
| Business actions | Read or change calendars, CRM records and other systems |
| Application | Manage tenants, configuration, history, access and billing |
| Telephony | Connect telephone numbers and call legs |
A product can combine several layers. A speech-to-speech model can also replace separate transcription and synthesis in some configurations. The right question is which responsibilities the specific offer takes on and which remain with you.
For example, LiveKit's telephony documentation describes the runtime/telephone boundary, while Vapi's introduction describes a voice-development entry point. Neither category label alone establishes the suitability of an entire customer workflow.
Evaluate context and actions together
Suppose a caller asks to move an appointment. The assistant needs the caller's identity, the existing appointment, allowed alternatives, and permission to change it. A convincing answer without a returned update is not a completed reschedule.
Ask each candidate how it retrieves approved facts, selects a connected action, handles missing fields and reports failure. Keep source information separate from action authority: reading a website is not permission to book, charge or send a message.
Test the conversation under change
A useful evaluation includes callers who correct themselves, change goals, interrupt an explanation and ask an unexpected question. The assistant should preserve confirmed facts without forcing the caller to repeat everything.
For voice, assess what the caller actually hears. A transcript can show a good answer even when playback was interrupted, delayed or never received. Telephone acceptance should include routing and hangup, not only model responses.
Inspect the operator experience
After the call, can a colleague find the transcript, distinguish completed actions from attempted actions, and understand the charge? Can they update instructions and test a draft without accidentally changing the live version? These maintenance tasks often determine whether a platform remains useful after its first demonstration.
Compare total operating cost and data obligations alongside the conversation quality. A highly configurable product may require engineering effort; a simpler product may constrain a required workflow.
Start with one complete journey
Choose a bounded task and follow it through creation, test, deployment and review. Burki's assistant workflow is one option to evaluate, not evidence that every provider or action combination is supported. The platform scorecard turns these questions into an explicit buying decision.
