Voice AI companies: a guide to the different product categories
Map voice AI companies by the layer they provide: models, speech services, carriers, runtimes and managed assistant platforms.
Table of Contents▼
Voice AI companies can sell very different things under similar language. A speech model, a telephone carrier and a managed receptionist application all participate in a voice service, but they are not direct substitutes.
Use a company list to identify the layer you need to buy. Then compare products within that layer or account explicitly for the additional components required.
A practical market map
| Product layer | Examples to investigate | What you still need to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Speech recognition | Deepgram, AssemblyAI | Supported audio, language and turn behavior |
| Generated speech | ElevenLabs, Cartesia | Voice rights, model fit and interruption handling |
| Conversation models | OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq-hosted models | Supported tools, context and billing units |
| Telephone connectivity | Twilio, Telnyx | Number eligibility, destinations and SIP/call-control setup |
| Voice runtime | LiveKit, Vocode | Application, operations and deployment responsibilities |
| Managed voice application | Retell, Vapi, Bland, Synthflow, Burki | Actual workflow, account limits and total cost |
This map is an orientation aid, not a capability guarantee or investment ranking. Some companies span several categories, and a company's full catalog may be broader than the part used by a particular platform.
Verify the current offer
Start with official product documentation. Useful examples are Deepgram's model overview, ElevenLabs' model catalog, Twilio's SIP documentation, and LiveKit telephony.
Check names carefully. An old article or reused domain can describe a different product from the service currently offered. Verify the seller, supported API, maintenance status and commercial terms before relying on a historical comparison.
Avoid counting components as finished integrations
A platform may use a provider's transcription API without exposing its full agent product. It may support a language model in a cascade while its default speech-to-speech mode uses a different model. A carrier account may exist but still lack a working route or verified number.
For each required capability, ask for the exact supported combination and an example of the business action you need. “Supports provider X” is only the beginning of that inquiry.
Narrow the shortlist with a task
If you want an after-hours receptionist, compare complete receptionist workflows. If you are building a new voice application, compare runtime and infrastructure responsibilities. If you only need more accurate recognition of names, compare transcription on representative audio instead of replacing the entire application.
Use the platform selection scorecard and cost worksheet to move from company names to a grounded decision. The final choice should reflect your callers, operators and budget—not the size of a logo wall.
