Designing a voice AI application beyond the demo

Connect the spoken conversation to authorized actions, observable outcomes and an operational recovery plan.

A voice AI application includes more than a model that speaks. It needs a connection to the caller, instructions grounded in business facts, permission to perform particular actions and a record of what happened. A demo can show an attractive voice while leaving those application responsibilities unresolved.

Map the components to owners

ComponentResponsibility
Voice sessionConnect audio, manage turns and release resources after hangup
Assistant configurationDefine approved facts, instructions and the selected version
Business actionsValidate arguments, enforce permissions and return an authoritative result
Call reviewShow the conversation, action evidence and unresolved failures
AccountingDistinguish estimated, reserved and settled usage

In Burki, LiveKit handles live media sessions while application services own workspace authorization, configuration, billing and history. This division does not make every external integration automatic.

Choose actions deliberately

An informational assistant can be useful without write access. Add an action when the task requires it and when its failure can be handled. For booking, confirm the intended slot and details, submit to the supported connected calendar and report success only after a verified result.

A timeout creates uncertainty. Before retrying an operation that changes another system, determine whether the first attempt succeeded. This matters for bookings, messages and customer-record changes alike.

Compare voice with text by task

Voice introduces spoken corrections, interruptions, silence and audio conditions. Test those directly. A text evaluation can check instruction following or action arguments, but cannot prove a caller heard the answer or could interrupt it.

Realtime speech and a recognition/model/synthesis cascade are different implementation choices. Neither removes the need for the same business permissions and outcome checks.

Define a launch boundary

Record which channels, languages, actions and human routes were tested. List unverified combinations separately. A browser test should lead to a controlled telephone test if the product will answer real phone calls.

Monitor useful outcomes rather than counting every completed session as resolution. Track inaccurate answers, failed actions, unresolved requests and actual usage costs. If staff cannot investigate a failed call or recover the business process, the application still has work to do.

Use the bounded testing plan before expanding traffic and the vendor security worksheet when reviewing data access.
